Some of you may recall that my co-worker is looking for a new ride after his Focus blew up. It looks like he's probably going to try to get financing for a late model used car. He wants to keep it under $10k, but he also wants something decent that will last a few years.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Right now his frontrunners appear to be a 2011 Fiesta:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And a 2011 Versa hatchback:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Both of which are being sold by the same dealer which is fairly close to our office, which should make back-to-back comparative test drives easy.

My only concern with the Fiesta is that the miles are a little steep, and if it hasn't had it's timing belt changed yet, it's certainly due. The Nissan's MR18DE, while fairly boring, does have a timing chain so it gets a pass there.

What does Oppo think of these cars?

If those are the choices it's Fiesta all day and twice on Sunday... have you driven the Versa? I see that this is the model with the 4 speed which is, and I can't believe I'm saying this, a BETTER option that the POS CVT that I've experienced in the Versa. But that really isn't saying much.

Why did it come down to these two?

The Versa is perfectly adequate, very reliable, efficient transportation, and has considerably more space, so those are positives. That's all they do though. They're the cheapest new cars in America for a reason. The Fiesta is a much nicer place to spend time in my opinion, plus it looks good and is fun to drive to boot. If all else was equal, that's what I'd have. But I'm not your car killing non-enthusiast friend, so the Versa is probably the more practical choice. Also, black is a bad color for cars owned by people who don't give a shit.

If he's going to ruin it, Versa. But I still say 90's Camry. That will take longer to kill, and be much cheaper to replace.

It came down to these because he wants a relatively late-model car that has a reputation for reliability and has a very limited budget.

I would tend to think that a Toyota product would probably be a better bet for him, but they hold their value well enough that the post-2010 models are all out of his price range.

I've driven the pre-Note Versa. My sister has one with the 4-speed automatic which is dog slow but gets the job done, and one of my friends has one with a 5 on the floor which is actually a pretty neat car to drive.

Are any Honda Fits in his price range around your area? I would definitely push for those first.

You know, if your coworker is just not a car enthusiast period, I can see wanting to go with the Versa, especially with the cost of a timing belt change and a clutch most likely in the next 20K miles on the Fiesta. And in SoCal I know you can find yourself traveling 20K over the course of 12 months with a long enough commute.

So sorry for not being at all helpful, but best of luck!

If your friend wants a Fiesta DO NOT GET THE AUTOMATIC GEARBOX. I know a number of that vintage of Fiesta with the autobox and it's a total and complete piece of garbage.
